Here are some ideas for sightseeing either before or after MathFest 2009:
PORTLAND

A great way to see Portland is from the Tram. You can access the tram from the South Waterfront. http://www.portlandtram.org/
THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN PORTLAND
BREWPUBS IN AND NEAR PORTLAND
Portland is world famous for its brewpubs. While locals have their favorites, here is a link to a site that lists breweries that belong to the Oregon Brewers Guild. http://oregonbeer.org/portland-metro/ These are actual breweries, with their own nectar on tap. Of course, nearly every restaurant and cafe has a selection of local micros on tap.
Here is a map of some of the Brewpubs in Portland courtesy of the Beer Mapping Project.
THE CASCADES
Just over 1 hour East of Portland stands Mount Hood, the tallest peak in Oregon at over 11,000 feet. This volcanic peak is a popular hiking, climbing, and skiing destination. Most years, there is skiing available even in August.
The scars of the 1980 eruption are still vivid. But life has returned to the mountain and the surrounding area.
Mount Rainier National Park - http://www.nps.gov/mora/
At over 14,400 feet, Mount Rainier is the tallest peak in the Pacific Northwest. The location called Paradise is a must see.
WATERFALLS (In August, some will be trickles)
The Columbia River Gorge is a National Scenic Area less than 1 hour East of Portland along I-84.
Located 46 miles South and East of Portland, Silver Falls State Park is home to old growth forest and numerous waterfalls.
OREGON COAST
Cannon Beach - A planned beach community with shops, good food, wonderful hotels and B&Bs, home to Haystack Rock, and a beautiful beach. Keep in mind the beach can be windy and the water is cold (current from the North).
Manzanita - A less planned community to the south. Great food. Wonderful rental homes. Beautiful beach and cliffs.
Cape Perpetua - Near the Sea Lion Caves and Devil's Churn.
OTHER
Ashland - This is a 5 hour drive south of Portland. It is home to a world-class Shakespeare Festival that includes other plays as well
http://www.osfashland.org/ It also is near some beautiful and wild hikes, near great wine country (the apple valley) and is within a short drive of Mount Shasta in northern California, and a long day trip to the Redwoods National Park
http://www.nps.gov/redw
San Juan Islands - Accessible by ferry from Anacortes or Seattle, these are absolutely beautiful islands, particularly in August. We love Orcas and San Juan Islands. There are neat shops, great short hikes, cycling (on San Juan especially), great B&B's, and you can take a guided beginner's kayak trip (may even see Orcas).
